BHUBANESWAR: The Jagatsinghpur police on Monday arrested a jail superintendent for his alleged involvement in supplying cell phones to an undertrial, who allegedly used those to run his extortion network from the jail. Superintendent of Alipingal Jail, Laxmidhar Panigrahi, was produced before a local court, which rejected his bail application and remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. "We have traced all outgoing calls from the jail superintendent and the cellphones used by undertrial Dhirendra Samal. The call chart gives ample evidence of the connection between the two," Jagatsinghpur district Superintendent of Police Y K Jethwa said. He said Samal, who was involved in robbery, attempt to murder and dacoity cases, had procured the mobile and SIM card through a jail warder, Shankar Swain. During interrogation the jail warder confessed that two sets of cellphones were supplied to the undertrial prisoner, Mr. Jethwa said.
