Three samiti members to be nominated

Special Correspondent

Elections could not be held as no nominations filed in Chakapada block

BHABANESWAR: Process has begun to nominate people for filling three posts of Panchayat Samiti members, five posts of Sarpanches and 86 posts of ward members in Chakapada Block of Kandhamal district following non-filing and withdrawal of nomination papers.

The three panchayats for which the State Government will nominate Panchayat Samiti members due to non-filing of nomination papers are Pasara, Kakharujhola and Chahali, the Commission said in an official release on Monday.

Initially, no nomination papers had been filed for five Panchayat Samiti member posts in the area. But after the Commission called for filing of nomination papers in the second round between January 25 and 29, nominations were filed for two panchayats of Chakapada and Brahmanapada.

The people of Chakapada area had not filed nomination papers for different posts responding to the call given by Jana Jagran Manch, a social organisation of the area, to highlight their demand for shifting of the block office from Bastingia to Chakapada.

On the other hand, people who had filed their nomination papers for the five Sarpanch posts and 86 of the 87 ward members posts in the five panchayats of Chakapada, Brahmanapada, Pasara, Kakharujhola and Chahali later withdrew their nomination papers.

As elections could not be conducted due to absence of contestants, the District Collector of Kandhamal has already written to the Panchayati Raj Department of the State Government to nominate people for the three Panchayat Samiti member posts.

Likewise, the Sub-Collector of Baliguda has initiated steps for the nomination of members of the public for the five Sarpanch posts and 86 ward member posts, the Commission release said.
