Technopark expansion to begin soon

Special Economic Zone status for second phase spread over 86 acres

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Procedural formalities for the launch of the second phase of the Technopark here are complete and the construction work is likely to begin this month.

Technopark chief executive officer (CEO) N. Radhakrishnan Nair told The Hindu on Monday that Infosys Technologies Ltd. and U.S. Technology International Pvt. Ltd. would be housed in the second phase, which will be located in 86 acres opposite the existing first phase. Of this, 50 acres had been earmarked for Infosys and the remaining for US Technology. The second phase would work as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The last hitch was the confusion regarding the relocation of a petrol pump in the area. The issue had been sorted out and the physical relocation of the pump would take place within a couple of months, he said.

Infosys authorities had informed that they were likely to start groundbreaking this month itself. The officials of U.S. Technology had not yet finalised their plans, Mr. Nair said.

Mr. Nair said the Technopark with an area of 242 acres was the largest IT park in the country. Nearly 115 companies were located here and they together employed about 15,000 people. More firms had shown interest in setting up operations here and by the year-end, the number of units was expected to go up to 150 and the employee strength to touch 20,000, he said.

He said Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and IBS Software Services Pvt. Ltd. would set up their next units at the SEZ in the existing Technopark. While IBS hoped to launch its unit by July or August, the TCS was in the process of finalising its campus design.

The third phase of the Technopark would be located in 100 acres adjacent to the first and second phases. "Land acquisition for the third phase is nearly complete and we should be getting the land by February-end. When that is complete, all the three phases of the Technopark will be located on a contiguous land."
