Bangalore: Reiterating the need for the Government and private sectors to invest more money in research and development, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said on Monday that this was the only way India could become globally competitive. Lamenting that a majority of Indian industries did not spend enough on research, the Defence Minister said that the new industries should spend more on research if India were to grow further and take its due place in the international arena. Delivering the presidential address at the three-day Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)-organised international seminar on "Aerospace Technologies: Challenges and Opportunities", Mr. Antony admitted that India's defence research needs needed more funds in the years to come. Citing the recent Indo-U.S. nuclear deal and the agreement with Russia on accessing navigational signals of the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System as examples, the Minister said that this signalled India's commitment to actively engage world leaders in the field of aerospace power and space. "We are willing to collaborate with international players to operationalise aerospace weapons and platforms. Shared efforts in technology lead to the development of cost-effective solutions. However, such partnerships should share the gains, risks as well as the work structure," he said. Highlighting India's recent achievements in the development of indigenous defence and aerospace platforms such as the Light Combat Aircraft, Advanced Light Helicopter, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and steps towards a manned mission to the moon, he said that investment in scientific research and development activities in the aerospace sector would lead to an improvement in infrastructure.
