CHENNAI : The last day for filing nominations for the re-elections to the Chennai Corporation Council on Monday saw 544 candidates submit their papers. The total number of nominations filed has gone up to 703, according to officials. Former Mayor Ma. Subramanian, who had submitted his resignation, along with 97 other councillors, was among those who filed their nominations on Monday. With the resignation of two AIADMK councillors immediately after the last elections, the number of wards scheduled for re-elections rose to 100. Starting with two nominations filed last Monday, more than 150 were filed over the intervening week. Of these, the DMK has filed 59, the Congress 25 and the PMK 13. Most candidates who were fielded last time are returning to the fray. The DMDK is again contesting almost all wards, with nominations filed for 96 of them. The BJP has filed 36 and the CPM 7. Independents make up for the rest of the 467. Following a split verdict from the High Court on the elections to the Chennai Corporation, the DMK-led coalition councillors resigned en masse. The Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2007, was introduced on January 22, amending the bill to permit the outgoing Mayor and Deputy Mayor to stand for re-election. Scrutiny of nominations has been scheduled for Tuesday and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is Thursday. Polling and counting have been scheduled for February 18 and 20, 2007, respectively.
