CHENNAI: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Monday condemned Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy's recent observations on the powers of High Court judges. Mr. Veerasamy's observations that the judiciary should not try to exceed its powers were an attempt at intimidating the judiciary, Mr. Vaiko said in a release. Chief Justice of the Madras High Court A.P. Shah was fully justified in criticising the State Government's formation of an enquiry commission in the case relating to the death of a girl student in a school at Omalur, without consulting the High Court. Mr. Veerasamy's comments on this as well as the High Court's verdict on the Chennai Corporation polls were harsh and unjustified. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Mr. Veerasamy should apologise for acting in an unconstitutional manner, Mr. Vaiko said. Mr. Veerasamy was justified in his comments on the judiciary, Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani said in a release. On the issue concerning the Chennai civic polls, the Chief Minister had acted in a manner befitting democratic principles when he announced that 99 councillors, including the Mayor, would resign, after the High Court gave a split verdict, Mr. Veeramani said. While describing the final verdict of the Tribunal as "shocking and disappointing," Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko said the people of Tamil Nadu had been cheated. "This final Tribunal order cannot be accepted and the verdict has not done justice to the people of the State," he said in a press release.
