NORTH CHENNAI FAIR: Crowds at the `Kolathur Thiruvizha' organised at Everwin school on Saturday.
CHENNAI: The commercial districts of north Chennai hardly come into focus as a marketplace that attracts a lot of people. In popular perception, south Chennai's T. Nagar and Mylapore attract the biggest crowds of shopkeepers not only from the city but even from the outlying areas. In this background, the `Kolathur Thiruvizha' conducted on Saturday last sought to project Perambur and its nearby areas a shopping area. "We have been conducting this fair for the past 10 years and this is the 11th successive year," says B. Purushothaman, correspondent of Everwin Matriculation School and the organiser of `Kolathur Thiruvizha'. It was jointly organised by the commercial establishments in Kolathur and Perambur, and the School. The fair drew large crowds. Forty three games were available for all people, children rides of various types, shopping of household items at rock bottom prices and a 2,000 sq. ft. eat-out marked the `Thiruvizha'. People even from distant parts of the city had a great time at the event held for nearly 11 hours from 9 a.m. "Our school and traders conduct the bazaar with the sole objective of enthralling the people for a full day. There is no entry fee. Even the game token is priced Rs. 2, 3 and 5. Food items were also inexpensive, as did the fun and games/rides that got popular among the children," said Mr. B. Purushothaman. Exclusive contests were conducted for women, more particularly for housewives. People of all ages took part in over 43 fun games and 14 sport events. Direct Selling Agents of LIC , ICICI, Reliance and several other companies had set up stalls to woo the customers.
