MADURAI: Over 3,000 residents benefited from the first `Varum mun kappom' preventive medical camp held at Sellur here on Monday.

The highlight of the camp, in which men, women and children were diagnosed for various ailments, was the visual inspection assessment, an advanced equipment to detect cervical cancer in women, said Chief Health Officer, N. Kathiresan.

"It is patient-friendly as it takes less time for the diagnosis. The procedure is also painless," he said.

Apart from medical officers for general medicine, specialist doctors including paediatrics, cardiologists, dermatologists and Siddha medical practitioners treated the people.

Besides ECG (electro cardiogram), other laboratory services such as urine and blood tests were conducted.

"Blood tests were conducted on all persons having fever for malaria and chikungunya," Dr. Kathiresan said. Blood pressure examinations were conducted for those above 40 years of age.

Those registered at the camp were given health cards.

Besides, those required further treatment were referred to Corporation hospitals and Government Rajaji Hospital.

"Efforts will be made to monitor whether the people referred for further treatment got necessary medical care. Multipurpose health workers will follow up and, if necessary, take them to hospitals," Dr. Kathiresan said.

Counsellors from Tamil Nadu State Aids Control Society gave general counselling on HIV/AIDS. The camp covered people from six wards.

Similar camps would be conducted every month.

The Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, inaugurated the camp. The Deputy Mayor, P.M. Mannan, north zone chairman, K. Esakkimuthu, were among those who were present.
