NUTRITIOUS: The Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, C. Thangamuthu, serving food to students to mark the inauguration of the scheme in Tiruchi on Monday.
TIRUCHI : To sustain the class attendance of school students and to improve their health with nutritious intake, the community breakfast scheme, under the school improvement programme, was introduced at Thanjammal Memorial Elementary School, Seva Sangam on Monday. The Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, C. Thangamuthu, inaugurated the scheme by serving the breakfast to the students. Addressing the students and teachers, Dr. Thangamuthu, said that breakfast played a crucial role in improving the concentration of the students. Terming it a social problem, he called for sponsors from philanthropists to keep the scheme going. The scheme would benefit 100 primary class students, who would be served pongal or dhal-gruel before the start of classes. Briefing on the scheme, the Project Coordinator and senior lecturer of District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), S. Sivakumar, said that the scheme had been brought out after months of research and analysis. Since most students were from economically challenged background and also hailing from a family where both the parents were either domestic or construction workers, they hardly got to eat sufficient breakfast. The regular complaints from teachers on the students' lack of concentration at classes, inability to stand for long during prayer hours and poor performances at academics, forced SIP to take up the project experimentally for a month. Observing the improved concentration and enthusiasm among students, the school decided to carry on with the scheme. Mr. Sivakumar commended the Principal, R. Visalaakshi, and the schoolteachers, who had initiated the scheme with sufficient fund by pooling in their resources. The parents thanked the coordinators and volunteers of the scheme and said that they were relieved of the economic difficulty to provide breakfast for their children. The inauguration was presided over by the Assistant Elementary Education Officer, M. Jagadesan, and chaired by the school administrator, S. Susheela Ganesh.
