HYDERABAD: In what is a record of sorts, the Transport Department has fetched a whopping Rs.25 lakhs after it auctioned 230 vehicles seized for getting involved in different violations.

Some 300 buyers participated in the two-day auction that began at the offices of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) at Trimulgherry and Nagole on Saturday. These vehicles, mostly auto-rickshaws and vans, were seized two years ago and were discarded at different traffic police stations, Joint Transport Commissioner (JTC) B. Venkateswarlu said here on Monday.

A public notice was issued in newspapers requesting owners to claim their vehicles. Separate letters were sent to vehicle-owners, but there was no response. Hence, the department had decided to dispose of the vehicles. Plans were afoot to conduct another auction by March end, he said.

    Special drive

Mr. Venkateswarlu stated a special drive was conducted two days ago on the Karimnagar route and stern action initiated against lorry drivers for overloading sand.

"We got Rs.1.3 lakhs after registering 15 cases against the drivers and seized four lorries," he said.

Mr. Venkateswarlu said 1,600 cases had been booked against auto drivers for not complying with rules.

"A decision was also taken to prosecute auto drivers under Section 192 (A) of Central Motor Vehicle Act for driving without permit in the city," he added.
