Four held for alleged betting racket

NEW DELHI: Four men allegedly running a betting racket on Australia-New Zealand cricket matches have been arrested by the Delhi police at Sarai Rohilla here. The owner of the flat is absconding.

A laptop, a colour television and six mobile phones were seized from their possession, the police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted and the accused -- Parvinder Singh (37), Harjeet Singh (45), Jitender Singh (39) and Avtar Singh (39) -- were arrested in Subhdara Colony over the weekend. They had allegedly received bets for Rs. 25, 000 at the time of arrest.

According to the police, the accused kept both the textual and audio records of callers in the laptop equipped with specially designed software. They were also in touch with a national bookie nicknamed "RK" to get information on betting rates as the match progressed.

Journalist killed in road mishap

NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old journalist working with a local evening newspaper was killed in a road mishap at Mehrauli here on Monday.

According to the police, O. P. Shukla, senior correspondent with Sandhya Veer Arjun, was on his way to office on a motorcycle on Monday morning when a private crane hit him from behind. He was declared brought dead at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. The driver has been arrested and a case of rash and negligent driving registered against him.

A native of Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Shukla lived with his sister at Pandav Nagar in East Delhi.

School buildings inaugurated

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Sajjan Kumar on Monday inaugurated two newly constructed municipal primary school buildings at Najafgarh here. The MCD has constructed these buildings at a cost of Rs.1.25 crore.

Mr. Kumar praised the civic body for developing a good school infrastructure in the city and providing other benefits to schoolchildren. MCD Standing Committee Chairman J. K. Sharma was among those present on the occasion.

Councillor dedicates school building

NEW DELHI: Senior BJP Councillor Vijender Gupta on Monday dedicated a newly constructed school building in Sector-V/B of Rohini here to the citizens. The MCD has constructed this building, comprising 31 classrooms and other facilities, at a cost of Rs.1.9 crore.

At another function, Delhi Congress president Ram Babu Sharma inaugurated 32 newly constructed classrooms at a municipal school in Mandoli.

New Member of Railway Board

NEW DELHI: S. K. Vij has taken over as the new Member (Engineering) of the Railway Board. He succeeds R. R. Jaruhar.

An Indian Railway Engineering Services officer of the 1971 batch, Mr. Vij has held several important positions in various railway zones. He was also associated with the high-speed project of Iraqi Railways.
