BANGALORE: Members of Forum for Citizens' Rights have opposed the decision of the Delimitation Commission (that is reorganising the areas based on population) to rename Yelahanka Assembly Constituency as Byatarayanapura Assembly Constituency and have called for Yelahanka bandh on February 9. Addressing presspersons here on Monday, forum president Shivakumar spoke of Yelahanka's antiquity saying it was a busy centre even in the time of the Chola rule. "Kempegowda, founder of Bangalore, ruled his kingdom from Yelahanka for decades. This place is by itself a hobli and a taluk having its own town municipal council, which was later converted into a city municipal council. It is unfortunate that such an important place will cease to be called a constituency henceforth," he said. Urging the authorities to reconsider the decision and ensure that Yelahanka Assembly Constituency remains to be called so, the forum has opposed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BBMP) decision to set up its zonal office in Byatarayanapura. Threatening to launch an agitation if the authorities do not consider the demand, Mr. Shivakumar said: "We hope that the authorities realise that there are issues concerning the people to be settled rather than having controversies over renaming a constituency," he added.
