The 19th Kerala Science Congress was a success in terms of the number of extended abstracts for publication in the proceedings volume released on the occasion. As many as 502 papers under 10 broad subject areas were received. Chairman of the three-day event R.V.G. Menon, however, highlighted certain unhealthy trends while sharing his impressions on the science congress at its valedictory function on January 31. Prof. Menon said the reactions of those whose extended abstracts were not included in the proceedings volume were unbecoming of scientists. Unfortunately, most of those who reacted emotionally were seniors, he said. He added that 376 of the papers had been selected for inclusion in the volume after a peer review process. Prof. Menon also pointed out the increasing female participation in the congress. The number of papers presented by women participants at the congress formed 53 per cent of the total papers. Was it an indication of under-representation of men in the higher education sector in the State that warrants reservation for male students? he asked in a jovial tone.
