City back on track, vegetables costlier

Software companies, industries function as usual

BANGALORE: Business establishments remained open in most areas on Tuesday. Software companies and industries functioned as usual and buses were back on the road.

Cinemas were open but none screened Tamil films. The audience was thin nonetheless.

However, vendors at Krishnaraja Market and Russel Market did brisk business with people purchasing vegetables and fruits though prices were inflated following shortage of supply.

Salim Ahmed, a wholesale pineapple merchant, said because of the undeclared bandh on Monday, he did not get the usual load of the fruit from Kerala.

The Coorg Pineapple Growers' Association faced a similar problem. The shortage in supply led to increase in the price of pineapple from Rs. 10 to Rs. 14 a kg.

Santosh. G., who sells leafy vegetables, said prices had trebled, as there was no supply from Sholagiri of Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu. The bandh also affected the arrival of vegetables from Hoskote and areas surrounding the city.

Life along Hosur Road, which connects Tamil Nadu, was normal with the usual flow of vehicles, including those transporting techies to Electronics City.

The Advocates Association of Bangalore has joined the chorus of protests against the verdict of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal. The association, at its general body meeting held on the City Civil Court premises, decided to stage a massive protest on Wednesday against the Tribunal's order before the District and Sessions Court premises behind Cauvery Bhavan.

The Bangalore Tamil Sangam has thanked the State Government for maintaining law and order following the final verdict of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and has sought security for life and property in view of bandh called by several organisations.
