Watson in for Symonds

BRISBANE: All-rounder Shane Watson was recalled to the Australian cricket team on Tuesday for the limited overs tri-series finals, beginning in Melbourne on Friday.

Watson replaces Andrew Symonds who has undergone surgery for a biceps injury. Fast bowlers Stuart Clark and Shaun Tait have also been omitted from the 13-man Australian squad for the best-of-three series.

Selector Andrew Hilditch said Watson, who missed the five-Test Ashes series with injury, had proved his fitness in recent domestic matches.

"Shane adds a great balance to the Australian one-day side and was an important member of the victorious Australian side at the ICC Champions Trophy," Hilditch said.

"Both Stuart and Shaun were unlucky to be omitted and remain very much in contention for selection in the ICC Cricket World Cup squad, which will be named at the conclusion of the finals," he said. — AP
