Rail tickets can be booked 90 days in advance

New Delhi: Planning to travel by train during the peak summer holiday season? There is good news for you. To enable passengers plan their journey well in advance, the Railways on Tuesday announced that the advance reservation period would be extended from 60 days to 90 days on an experimental basis.

The Railways also inked an agreement with the State-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to open e-ticketing facilities at petrol pumps across various cities, including Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi.

A spokesman of the Railways said the new advance reservation period (excluding the date of journey) will be part of a pilot project to enhance passenger facilities. The new system comes into effect from March 1.

In the first phase of opening e-ticketing kiosks at petrol pumps, Delhi would have the facility in 11 petrol pumps, while it would be installed in six pumps each in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Five petrol pumps in Secunderabad would be equipped with e-ticketing kiosks, three in Bangalore and one in Pune.
