KARIMNAGAR: Communist Party of India district leaders made a vain bid to conduct famine raids on wholesale kirana shops in the busy Gunj market area in Karimnagar town on Tuesday in protest against the steep increase in prices of essential commodities and alleged hoarding by traders. Sensing trouble, the police reinforced additional forces and posted policemen in front of each wholesale shop in the area. Earlier, some shopkeepers downed shutters even before the arrival of protesters. When a huge contingent of CPI activists led by district secretary Marri Venkat Swamy arrived at the area, the police prevented their entry into the market place. Later, the agitationists were allowed inside following a promise that they would stage a dharna only. Raising slogans against the Government, they alleged that traders were hoarding commodities and selling at inflated prices.
