Staff Reporter

Consumption of readymade food up

  • It is for the industry to maintain high standards
  • Consumer forum should educate the people

KOCHI: District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish has highlighted the need for spreading awareness on permitted food colours and preservatives.

Inaugurating a workshop on food colours, organised by Bake, association of bakers in Kerala, he called for a healthy relation between consumers and food outlets.

The people of Kerala have encouraged the baking industry. It is for the industry to maintain high standards and provide quality service to the people.

The industry is not running on subsidies while it is generating a lot of employment opportunities.

Commercialisation has crept into the food sector too and the consumption of readymade food items is on the rise.

The people should know the impact of the use of harmful food additives on health. Consumer organisations and other bodies should educate the people, he said.

P.M. Sankaran, president of the association, said the members had already been asked to abandon the use of food colours in traditional food items.

The association is ready to follow the norms adopted in the food industry, he said.

    K. Sundararajan, Director, Quality Assurance, Asia Pacific & India, International Flavours & Fragrances (IFF), made a presentation on the safety aspects and related issues in the use of food colours.

Food inspectors and other experts spoke.
