NEW DELHI: The estimates for production of foodgrains (rice and wheat) have been lowered to 209.17 million tonnes, against the target of 220 million tonnes during 2006-07, due to adverse weather conditions.

Targets

According to the second advanced estimates released by the Union Agriculture Ministry here on Tuesday, the target for foodgrains production is put at 220 million tonnes. That for wheat and rice is estimated at 75.53 million tonnes and 90.13 million respectively.

The nine major oilseeds are also likely to be hit due to hostile weather conditions with their total production estimates lowered to 236.19 lakh tonnes as against 279.79 lakh tonnes produced during 2005-06.

In cotton, the production is estimated to be one of the highest in the recent years with the second advanced estimates pegging it at 209.64 lakh tonnes. This is against the target of 185 lakh bales for 2006-07 and a production of 184.99 lakh bales achieved during 2005-06.

Sugarcane production is also expected to go up to 3155.28 lakh tonnes as per the second advanced estimates. This is against the target of 2,700 lakh tonnes set for the current year.

Sugarcane production during 2005-06 stood at 2,811.72 lakh tonnes.
