Residents' council plea to take over monument

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Kollam Residents' Apex Council has called upon the State Government to take over the historical SMP Palace in Kollam and hand over the building to the Archaeology Department to be maintained as a museum and art gallery.

The building was constructed in the year 1936. In a statement, council general secretary C. Amalolbhavan alleged that if the Kollam Corporation were to take over the building complex, it would be subjected to wanton encroachment with the connivance of the authorities concerned. Encroachers have been continuously protected by a section of the Corporation councillors, he alleged. The statement pointed out that even other historical monuments in the city like the Tangasseri Fort and the Buckingham Canal were encroached upon. Successive annual budgets of the Kollam Corporation had made allocations for the renovation of the fort. But never was the allocation utilised for the purpose.
