A special trip down memory lane

All set for the Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally this coming Sunday

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE: The Statesman Vintage Car rally is round the corner

The much-awaited annual Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally-2007 to be flagged off from Barakhamba Road in the Capital this coming Sunday promises to be a trip down memory lane for car lovers.

First organised way back in 1964, the event provides a great opportunity to vintage enthusiasts every year to proudly travel down the road in their old beauties with hundreds of car lovers cheering them all the way.

The rally has received more than a hundred entries this year.

An important outcome of the annual rally is that many old cars have been salvaged from the scrap heap and restored for participation. At the rally, as many as 38 trophies are awarded and the cars evaluated on the basis of their originality, maintenance and performance.

The Air Chief, Air Chief Marshal S. P. Tyagi, will flag off the rally from Statesman House in Connaught Circus at 8-15 a.m. on D-Day. After the go-ahead, the vintage and classic cars will travel down Kasturba Gandhi Marg, India Gate, Shanti Path, Moti Bagh, National Highway-8, Rajiv Chowk to Malibu Towne. Lunch will be served at Tivoli Garden Resort after which the rallyists will head for National Stadium.

The winners will be presented the trophies by Ms. Vandana Tyagi, wife of the Air Chief, at the award ceremony at National Stadium.

A team of judges will conduct a pre-event inspection and evaluation on Saturday at Statesman House between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

After thoroughly scrutinising the applications, the judges have approved the participation of 55 vintage (pre-1940) models, 30 post-War cars and 15 in the classic section. Some outstation entries have been received including the famous Ford from the Border Security Force Academy in Tekanpur. The cavalcade of old favourites will be led by the 1914 John Morris fire engine that has been kept at the National Railway Museum in Chanakyapuri.
