Farmers lay siege to Chief Engineer's office in Gorur

Staff Correspondent

He has been asked not to release water to Tamil Nadu under any circumstance

HASSAN: Hundreds of farmers led by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president Kodihalli Chandrasekhar on Tuesday laid siege to the Chief Engineer's office in Gorur (Hemavathi Reservoir).

They demanded that the Chief Engineer Mohan should not release water to Tamil Nadu as per the judgment of the Cauvery Tribunal. Members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike also accompanied the sangha. Speaking to The Hindu from Gorur, Kodihalli Chandrasekhar said that they told the Chief Engineer not to release water to Tamil Nadu under any circumstance.

Mr. Chandrasekhar said the sangha firmly believed that there should be no law or enactment on nature and water was a part of nature.

Drought areas

He said there is a rule that if a State had more agriculture area under drought, such areas should get more water. Karnataka is the number two State in the country under drought and hence it should get additional water. The tribunal while allocating share of water did not even consider this aspect.
