Bus, truck services remain suspended

HOSUR: Bus and lorry services from Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem and Thiruvannamalai districts to Bangalore remained suspended for the second consecutive day in view of the tense situation in Karnataka. Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation provided shuttle services from Jujuvadi to Hosur, Andhivadi to Hosur and other border areas to transport stranded passengers. However private buses and lorries bearing the registration number of other States were allowed to enter Karnataka after checking by the Krishnagiri police. Traffic was disrupted on NH-7 for more than an hour on Tuesday following a road blockade by farmers at Chandapuram on the Karnataka border. More than 1,000 lorries and private buses from Tamil Nadu were stopped at Krishnagiri and Shoolagiri on NH7 due to suspension of services. Security has been tightened at Hogenakkal, Hosur and other border areas in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. — Staff Reporter

Three Tamil activists arrested

CUDDALORE: The police on Monday arrested the Tamilar Viduthalai Iyakkam (Suba Ilavarasan faction) activists — K. Ashok Kumar of Vriddhachalam, K. Siva alias Ezhumalai of Alapakkam and Gunasekaran of Kullanchavadi. As they had long sickles in their possession, the Arms Act provisions were invoked against them. After producing them before the court, they were remanded in the Cuddalore Central Prison. — Special Correspondent

201 vocational teacher posts filled

CHENNAI: In all, 201 posts of second grade vocational teachers have been filled from among qualified vocational education teachers. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi issued orders to this effect. They were appointed as time-scale teachers. — Special Correspondent

DMK women's wing rally on February 10

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam women's wing rally will be held as scheduled on February 10, says a party release. The rally will be held in all district headquarters to demand speedy implementation of the 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament. — Special Correspondent

More Sri Lankan refugees arrive

PUDUKOTTAI: Ten Sri Lankan refugees, including five children, who escaped from the island-nation by a boat, arrived at Kottaipattinam in the district on Tuesday, were sent to the Mandapam camp. According to official sources, after an enquiry, the police and revenue officials sent them to the Mandapam camp. — Staff Reporter

Temple priest killed in blast

TIRUCHI: A 30-year-old temple priest died when he attempted to break unexploded ammunition at his house at Veerappur, a few kilometres from Manapparai in the district on Tuesday. Selvam, the priest, is said to have picked up the ammunition from the "notified firing range" at Veeramalai. The ammunition exploded when he tried to tinker it using an `aruval.' He died on the spot. The Vaiyampatti police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

BSNL online counters

PUDUKOTTAI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will soon open on-line counters to pay telephone bills at Thirumayam and Kottaipattinam in the district.

According to a press release from the Principal General Manager, BSNL, A. Balraj, the BSNL introduced a similar facility in Alangudi recently and more than 350 customers took advantage of the same.

Rowdy shot dead

TIRUCHI : A notorious rowdy, Manalmedu Sankar, was reportedly shot dead when he attempted to escape from police custody taking advantage of an accident near old Gandarvakottai in Pudukottai district on Monday night.

Police sources said he tried to escape in the melee caused by the fall of the escort vehicle to a wayside depth after it dashed against a tamarind tree. The police team had to open fire since Manalmedu Sankar had attacked them indiscriminately while trying to escape. He reportedly died on the spot. Manalmedu Sankar was being taken to Madurai after appearance in a court in Mayiladuthurai when the shoot out took place.

109 cases booked

TIRUCHI : The Tiruchi rural police have launched an operation against illicit distillation by conducting mass raids on various places in the district on Tuesday. During the raids as many as 109 cases were registered and equal number of persons allegedly involved in the illegal activity of illicit distillation and sale of arrack were arrested.

Conducted on the instruction of the Superintendent of Police, Ashok Kumar Das, the raiding parties seized and destroyed over 1,000 litres of illicit arrack and 1,000 litres of fermented wash.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 84.22 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday.

The inflow was 243 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Illegal possession of liquor, one held

Tuticorin: The police have arrested Karthikeyan on a charge of possessing liqour bottles at Meerapalayam near here on Monday.

A total of three brandy bottles were seized from the accused, while he was attempting to sell it without any licence, the police said.

College girl missing

Tuticorin: A 19-year-old girl studying at CSI Polytechnic at Nazareth near here was missing recently. The police said that the girl was under the protection of her uncle since her parents died a few years ago.

Pedestrian hit by motorbike, injured

Tuticorin: D. Regan (24) suffered injuries after he was hit by a motorbike at Pudukottai, near here, on Monday. The accident happened while he was walking along the Tuticorin-Tirunelveli highway. The police have registered a case against Abraham Cruz (27), the bike rider, for rash and negligent driving.

Two commit suicide

Tuticorin: In separate incidents, two persons committed suicide by hanging here on Monday. Mahalakshmi (25) committed suicide owing to schezophrenia, while Kannan (25) ended his life due to family dispute.

Senate election

MADURAI: The election of 15 members to the Senate of Madurai Kamaraj University from the registered graduates' constituency will be conducted on February 25, according to a press release from the Registrar.

Polling will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 13. Counting of votes will be taken up at 4.15 p.m. the same day, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Fatal knock

SALEM: Tirugnanam (19) of Ammapet was fatally knocked down by a lorry here on Monday. He was riding a cycle when the accident took place.

Death toll up

SALEM: The death toll in the road accident at Nathakaraimedu in Talavasal near Attur rose to seven as Raman (48), one of the injured, admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital died on Monday. Earlier, six labourers were killed when a lorry carrying tapioca lost control and turned upside down.

METTUR: A team from Loss of Ecology (Prevention and Payment of Compensation) Authority visited West Konur village and in Mettur, and assessed the level of pollution caused by industries.
