PROTEST: Karnataka Rakshana Vedike activists being removed by the police after they tried to stop the Chalukya Express train in Dharwad on Monday.
HUBLI: Karnataka Rakshana Vedike activists staged a "rasta roko" in Hubli on Tuesday in protest against the "injustice" meted out to Karnataka with regard to sharing of the Cauvery waters. They staged a demonstration at Kittur Channamma Circle, shouting slogans against the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. Leaders of the vedike who addressed the protestors alleged that the tribunal had been partisan in its delivery of the final award. The vedike activists were supported by office-bearers of other organisations and also farmers from neighbouring villages. The Government should immediately appeal to the tribunal for revision of its final order and if there was no positive response, it should move the Supreme Court, they said. The protestors burnt the effigy of the tribunal and staged a "rasta roko." They refused to withdraw the blockade despite the police asking them to do so. An altercation ensued and the police took into custody several activists. They were released in the evening. In Dharwad, the vedike activists staged a "rasta roko" in protest against the verdict. Protests were held in Haveri district too. In Gadag, the vedike took out a protest march. After staging a "rasta roko" for more than half an hour at the Mahatma Gandhi Circle in Gadag, they laid siege to the head post office.
