BANGALORE: U.T. Fareed, Congress MLA, who passed away in Ullal on Tuesday morning, was a member of the 5th, 6th, 11th and 12th Legislative Assemblies. The Assembly paid tributes to him on Tuesday. Speaker Krishna, who led the House in paying homage to the legislator, recalled his services to the State. Home Minister M.P. Prakash and Water Resources Minister K.S. Eshwarappa remembered Mr. Fareed's contribution to society and the Muslim community in particular. Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh said his death was a big loss to the party as well as to the Muslim community. Mr. Fareed advocated secular principles and became a mass leader in Mangalore, Mr. Singh said. Senior member M. Mallikarjun Kharge, S.S. Patil and Dinesh Gundu Rao (all Congress) recalled his contribution to the cooperative sector. G.V. Srirama Reddy (CPI-M), Vatal Nagaraj (Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha), J.C. Madhuswamy (JD-U) and N. Yogish Bhat (BJP) offered their condolences. The Speaker adjourned House for the day after observing a minute's silence.
