Clash between activists of SFI and NDF

Thiruvananthapuram: University College was declared indefinitely closed following a clash between activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and the National Development Front (NDF) on Tuesday evening.

The police said one NDF and two SFI activists were injured in a clash at the Saphalyam Shopping Complex in front of the college around 4.30 p.m. The injured were identified as Prasanth (21) of Manacaud, Shyam (19) of Pappanamcode and Nahas (21) of Kaniyapuram.

Prasanth and Shyam are BA economics students while Nahas is studying Islamic history. Officials said Prasanth sustained a stab on his chest and Shyam a deep cut on his head. They were under treatment at Medical College Hospital. Nahas was admitted to a private hospital in the city.

Three students were injured in a similar clash near the college last week. The NDF-backed Campus Front and the SFI had been at odds with each other after an NDF activist was elected college councillor.

The police registered a case in connection with the incident and intensified patrolling in the area to prevent escalation of violence, an official said.
