KOTTAYAM: P.K. Narayana Panicker, general secretary of Nair Service Society (NSS), in a statement issued at Perunna, has asked the members of his community to keep restraint and desist from any move that would disrupt peace and communal harmony in society.

Mr. Panicker's statement comes in the wake of the protest march taken out by the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam members.

In his statement, Mr Panicker also called upon the Government to take effective steps to rein in those who were engaged in activities that would disturb peace and tranquillity in society, whatever reasons they might be espousing.

"It was unfortunate that (SNDP Yogam general secretary) Vellappally Natesan has come out with misleading and provocative statements against me and the NSS, which would lead to increased communal hatred," Mr. Panicker said in the statement and added that he had not raised any allegation against anyone.

Mr. Panicker said he had received a complaint from S. Sreedharan Potti (father of the Malikappuram Melsanthi) on the alleged corruption in the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), and as a social worker, he believed it was his duty to bring it to the attention of the High Court-appointed Commission that inquires into the corruption in TDB.

Yogam march

The SNDP Yogam on Tuesday took out a march to the headquarters of the NSS in protest against what it termed the attempt on the part of the NSS leaders to malign the Yogam leadership.

Hundreds of people participated in the march organised by the Changanassery Taluk Union of the Yogam. The march, which started from the Mathumoola Junction near Changanassery, was stopped more than a kilometre away from the NSS headquarters at Perunna. Inaugurating a sit-in, council member V.Ponnappan warned the NSS leaders with dire consequences if they tried to malign the Yogam leaders.
