NALGONDA: Hundreds of activists of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were arrested when they tried to lay siege to the Collectorate over different issues on Tuesday.

The police swung into action when a good number of the CPI activists blocked all three gates in an attempt to prevent officials from entering the Collectorate. They raised slogans against the Government holding it responsible for sky rocketing prices of essential commodities. The police used mild force to dispel the activists and arrested them for continuing their agitation. The arrested persons included CPI district unit secretary Palla Venkat Reddy, Munugode MLA, district executive member Ujjini Ratnakar Rao, ZPTC members -- M. Vijayalaxmi, B. Venkataiah, G. Lingaiah -- and MPP president S. Raghupathi. They were shifted to the I Town police station.

    R. Ravindrakumar, Devarakonda MLA, and others were arrested near the Ambedkar statue when they blocked the road. Later, the police also arrested the BJP activists led by district unit president Goli Madhusudan Reddy, when they squatted in front of the Collectorate against Pothireddypadu project.

Meanwhile, TDP leaders staged a dharna at Kondapur water plant.
