An unwelcome verdict, says AIADMK

CHENNAI: The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's final award is an unwelcome verdict, All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa said on Tuesday.

Criticising Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for his favourable response to the final award, she said the quantity of water to be released by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu had now been reduced from 205 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft), prescribed in the interim order, to 192 tmcft. Of this, 7 tmcft was allocated to Puducherry. So, the net quantity was 185 tmcft for the State.

Noting that Kerala had been given 30 tmcft, she contended that this would go waste, as there was no command area in that State. As six tmcft had to be given from the Bhavani river to Kerala, the farmers dependent on the river might suffer.

The only option available now to Tamil Nadu was to approach the Supreme Court immediately. During the pendency of the case, the Central Government should be urged to notify the order, Ms. Jayalalithaa said.

She added that Mr. Karuananidhi could not obtain justice for the State.

The CPI State committee welcomed the final order and said this would bring about resolution of the long-standing dispute.
