Advocates association calls for token boycott

The aim is "to safeguard the dignity of the institution"

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) has called for a token boycott of court proceedings on Wednesday "to safeguard the dignity of the institution." A resolution to this effect was adopted at an extraordinary general body meeting of the MHAA convened by its president R.C. Paul Kanagaraj on Tuesday.

The meeting was convened after two memoranda — one each by the advocates wing of the AIADMK and the DMK, were presented to the president — calling for a meeting to discuss the February 4, 2007 remarks of Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy against Judges, and the February 2005 statement of former Chief Minister Jayalalitha on the floor of the Assembly on the conduct of judges. After a lengthy and acrimonious debate, the meet resolved to condemn anyone who ventured to interrupt or interfere with the functioning of the judiciary. "At the same time, the judiciary should function within its limits and avoid unwarranted comments." Reiterating that advocates were duty-bound to safeguard the dignity of the judiciary, the resolution said it would not approve of anybody intruding into its independence.
