KANCHEEPURAM : A comprehensive proposal to ensure safe and effective disposal of garbage generated in village panchayats in the vicinity of Chennai has been mooted, according to Collector Pradeep Yadav. As per the proposal, village panchayats coming under the five panchayat unions Sriperumpudur, Kundrathur, St. Thomas Mount, Tiruporur and Kattankolathur would be allowed to use government lands in their villages as dumping ground. Women self-help groups would be engaged to collect garbage from households and other establishments and segregate it into bio-degradable and non-degradable garbage at the dumping site. Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, the Collector said funds required to put up a compound wall at the dumping site and waste segregation sheds, buy tri-cycles or motor vehicles for door-to-door collection and set up bio-manure generation sheds would be drawn from schemes such as the SGRY etc. Monthly honorarium would be paid to the SHGs engaged in door-to-door collection and garbage disposal process.
