Security tightened around Girish Karnad's house

Ranga Shankara cancels staging of `Karnad Company'

Bangalore: Security has been stepped up around the house of Jnanpith awardee Girish Karnad after he reportedly received threatening calls on Tuesday following statements he made regarding the Cauvery Tribunal verdict.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Alok Kumar told The Hindu said police personnel had been posted in the vicinity of Mr. Karnad's house in J.P. Nagar 6th Block.

Anticipating trouble from certain sections of the public, the drama theatre, Ranga Shankara cancelled the staging of "Karnad Company," a compilation of plays written by Mr. Karnad by the theatre group Vedike.

A representative of Ranga Shankara said the theatre group had pulled out the play on Tuesday evening and the theatre staged a children's play in its place.

Meanwhile, reacting to the statements made by Mr. Karnad on the tribunal's verdict, Kannada Rakshana Vedike activists burnt an effigy of Mr. Karnad in Chamarajpet here.

Response

Former Minister B.K. Chandrashekhar has said in a statement here on Tuesday that "One cannot prevent free expression of views by resorting to threats and blackmails, as people have attempted."

He said that he and several others including Jnanpith awardee and writer U.R. Ananthamurthyand Lakshminarayana Nagavara, State Convenor, Karnataka State Dalit Sangharsh Samithi would be compelled to protest, if threats and attacks on individuals and performance of plays continue.
