Jail bursting at the seams
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
The already over-crowded Bangalore Central Prison is bursting at the seams with new entrants, thanks to the protests over the final verdict by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
"The police have so far lodged 249 persons here as per the orders of the Police Commissioner ," Deputy Inspector General (Bangalore Central Prison) B.S. Abbai said. The existing facilities can cope with this number. However, should the police haul in some more, they will be packed off to either the Bellary or the Gulbarga Central Prison.
If things get a bit desperate, the Prison Department would be looking at prisons under construction in Tumkur and Chitradurga, he added.
