Seven years' RI for three Delhi policemen

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A local court on Tuesday sentenced three Delhi policemen to seven years' rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs.5,000, in the Mehrauli police station custody death case. The court had convicted them of culpable homicide not amounting to murder this past Friday. The court had acquitted another accused, Inspector Buddhi Prakash, in the case.

Additional Sessions Judge S. P. Garg, while pronouncing the sentence, said the court had given the least possible punishment. Prior to the pronouncement, convict Head Constable Rajvir Singh had prayed for leniency.

Besides Rajvir, the other two policemen to be sentenced were constables Bachchu Singh and Ramesh Hudda. Home Guard Kanwar Pal has been declared a proclaimed offender in the case.

If the accused fail to deposit the fine amount, they would have to undergo three months of additional imprisonment, the court said.

Counsel for the victim, Indal, also requested the court to award compensation to the victim's family. However, the Judge said the victim's family had already been awarded a compensation of Rs.3 lakhs by the Delhi High Court.
