ANANTAPUR: Differences between two trade unions affiliated to AITUC and CITU in Precot B mills near Hindupur on Wednesday led to a clash between the workers and alleged manhandling of Assistant Commissioner of Labour P.K. Rama Naidu. The Mr. Rama Naidu had convened a meeting with the two trade unions and the management for preparation of a list of casual workers in the mill for conducting verification polls. While the union affiliated to AITUC and management were against extending voting rights to casual workers, the CITU-affiliated union was in favour of it.
Lathicharge
Following an argument, members of the two unions threw chappals and stones on one another. In a fit of emotion members of the union affiliated to AITUC allegedly manhandled the ACL, as he insisted on extending voting rights to casual workers. The police brought the situation under control by resorting to mild lathicharge. Six workers sustained injuries in the incident. Before leaving the mills, Mr. Rama Naidu stated that no verification polls would be conducted in the mill until a list of casual workers was sent to his office. Meanwhile, representatives of the management stated that they had moved the High Court on the issue and it had already given verdict on January 19 stating that it was at the liberty of the management to give the list of casual workers to the ACL. The CITU also filed a petition later on the same issue. There are 659 permanent and about 200 casual workers in the mill and verification polls are being conducted since 1983.
