Gulbarga
Special Correspondent
GULBARGA: The people of Gulbarga are forced to undergo the ordeal of repeated traffic snarls on the busy old Jewargi Road owing to a narrow railway under-bridge, particularly in the morning and evening. Commuters are forced to wait for more than 30 minutes to cross the under-bridge.
Over-bridge
Earlier, people going from Gulbarga to other places such as Bangalore had to use the under-bridge. Taking into account the heavy traffic, the State Government persuaded the railway authorities to construct an over-bridge on the new Jewargi Road in the mid-1970s easing traffic congestion on the old Jewargi Road. However, a few months after the opening of the over-bridge, the authorities prevented trucks and buses from using the old Jewargi Road. The narrow opening of the under-bridge allows only one-way traffic. The increased volume of traffic in recent years has made life miserable for the users of the old Jewargi Road with repeated traffic jams, particularly during office and school hours. Commuters near the under-bridge stuck in traffic jams for long periods in the morning and evening hours are a common sight. The authorities have also not thought it fit to install a traffic signal to regulate the movement of vehicles. They have not posted a traffic policeman near the under-bridge to regulate the traffic resulting in total chaos.
Representation
Residents on either side of the under-bridge had represented to the general manager of Central Railway Y.K. Kaul during his recent visit to Gulbarga Railway Station for constructing an over-bridge to replace the under-bridge on the old Jewargi Road to ease problems of the commuters. Mr. Kaul had said that he would consider the request.
