Cashew processors drop stir plan

KOLLAM: Following a meeting with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Wednesday evening in Thiruvananthapuram, the private sector cashew processors decided to call off the proposed indefinite closure of cashew factories from February 8. — Staff Reporter

Best poster award

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The poster designed by P.R. Sreekumar has won the `best poster award' at the Science Congress held in Kannur recently. He won the award for his paper and posters on `Biomedical Waste Disposal and its Status in Kerala' prepared under the guidance of A.S.K. Nair, scientist, Centre for Earth Science Studies. Mr. Sreekumar is a section officer in the State Government Secretariat. — Special Correspondent

Compensation sought

Thiruvananthapuram : Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has demanded compensation to the tune of Rs.10 lakh for a tribal who drowned in the Kabini River while trying to escape from the police. In a letter to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Mr. Chandy wanted the Government to suspend from service the policemen responsible for the death of the tribal, Mani, besides providing a government job for his widow. — Special Correspondent

Speed Post network expanded

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Speed Post network has been expanded in the State by opening additional centres and extending the working hours of certain centres. New Speed Post counters with 24-hour booking facility have been started at Kollam and Kottayam Railway Mail Service offices.

Round-the-clock booking facility is already available at Thiruvalla and Thiruvananthapuram RMS offices. The Speed Post counter at Kayamkulam RMS will function from 5.30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Neyyattinkara sorting centre from 3 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and Kottarakkara sorting centre from 2 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. — Staff Reporter

Village tourism project planned

PATHANAMTHITTA: Collector Ashok Kumar Singh said that the Tourism Department would launch a novel village tourism project in the district soon.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Collector said that the proposed project would be a joint venture of the Tourism Department and the grama panchayats. Both the parties would bear the expense at 50:50 ratio. The project would be implemented in 10 grama panchayats in the district in the first phase. The panchayats should submit their project proposal for the same, along with a request for financial assistance at the earliest. - Staff Reporter

CBI probe sought

PATHANAMTHITTA: National executive member and the former State president of the BJP C.K. Padmanabhan has demanded a CBI inquiry into the `irregularities' in the MC Road development project. Mr. Padmanabhan who reached Thiruvalla, leading a BJP campaign demanding immediate resumption of the MC Road development project, was talking to mediapersons on Wednesday afternoon. He said that the United Democratic Front should clarify its stand on the BJP's demand for a CBI probe in the MC Road `scam'. - Staff Reporter

Seminar on mathematics

ALAPPUZHA: NSS College, Cherthala, will hold a seminar on `Traditional and Modern Mathematics — a comparative study' on February 8 and 9. G. Madhukumar, Principal, will inaugurate the seminar at 9.30 a.m. on February 8. George Geevarghese Joseph of the University of Manchester, U.K., will present a paper on Historical importance of Kerala Mathematics during the inaugural technical session. — Staff Reporter

RSS meet on February 11

THRISSUR: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will hold a meet (`Thrissivaperoor Hindu Sangamam') here on February 11 to mark the finale of district-level programmes to observe the birth centenary of Guru Golwalkar. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Sangamam reception committee chairman C. S. Menon and RSS district sanghchalak G. Mahadevan said 10,000 people were expected to attend the function.
