Governor undergoes surgery

BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi underwent a curative knee surgery on February 5 at a private hospital in the city. The Governor had an accident 20 years ago that damaged the tibia of the right leg. As he had been experiencing some discomfort it was decided to go in for an operation, said a communiqué from the Raj Bhavan.

The surgery was successful and the Governor was keeping a good health, the release added. — Staff Reporter

CBI probe sought into murder

Bidar: Various organisations organised a dharna in Bidar on Wednesday demanding a CBI probe into the murder of Vijay Kumar Nagamarapalli. Protesters assembled at Ambedkar circle and held a rasta roko.

They took out in a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.

Act against Hasanabba: Sageer

BANGALORE: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Minority Department chairman and former Minister C.R. Sageer Ahmed has appealed to party leaders to initiate disciplinary action against party MLC B.A. Hasanabba for his reported remarks against senior leaders of the party.

In a press release, Mr. Ahmed alleged that Mr. Hasanabba had violated party discipline through his reported remarks against the functioning of senior leaders. — Special Correspondent

Tests postponed

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Public Service Commission has postponed the viva voce of Kannada language departmental examination, which was scheduled for Thursday.

A release said that the test to be conducted at Chamundi Guesthouse had been postponed to Friday and would be held from 3 p.m.

The KSRTC has postponed the physical examination for candidates appearing for drivers and conductors scheduled to be held on Thursday.

Support for bundh

HASSAN: The Hemavathi Cauvery Horata Samithi, along with pro-Kannada organisations, has expressed support to the bundh call on February 12 on the verdict of the Cauvery Tribunal. Convener of the samithi Dharmaraj Kadaga said on Wednesday in a press release that the group has resolved to reject the judgment and demand for the removal of silt accumulated at the Hemavathi reservoir and the appointment of Kannadiga advocates from the State to debate the issue in the Supreme Court. — Staff Correspondent

Students' agitation

HASSAN: The strike by students of the Government Polytechnic for Women here entered the third day on Wednesday. They are demanding suspension of the Head of the Fashion Technology Department Shanta Kumari, who allegedly has harassed students and threatened to fail them in the examination. The students formed a chain at N.R. Circle. The demonstration is being led by the Hassan unit of the Students Federation of India (SFI). — Staff Correspondent

Medical conference

BELLARY: The Bellary Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society, in association with Indian Medical Association Bellary, will host the two-day MUSKCON-2007, the annual conference of the Medical Ultrasound Society of Karnataka, from February 10 at the Microbiology hall of the Vijayanagar

Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) here. The thrust of the conference will be not only on the declining sex ratio but also on the advantages of the application of ultrasound. Director of VIMS Khaja Naseeruddin will inaugurate the conference. B.S. Ramamurthy, a noted doctor, will be chief guest. — Staff Correspondent

Vendors protest

BIJAPUR: Arrack vendors staged a protest against the Government's move to ban arrack products in the State from the coming financial year, here on Wednesday.

The protesters, who took out a procession, handed over a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, to the district administration.

President of the Bijapur Arrack Vendors Association Suresh Garudkar said that over 1,500 families were dependant on the arrack business in the city, and any move to stop arrack sale would deprive them of their livelihood. Besides, it would increase production of illicit liquor. — Staff Correspondent

Officials suspended

Belgaum: Two officials of the Belgaum City Corporation have been suspended on the charge of dereliction of duty. According to corporation Commissioner M.S. Chennappagoudar, junior engineer P.B. Degnolli and Inspector S.R. Chougale have been suspended for neglecting the improvement and cleanliness work taken up in view of the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana that is to be held in the city from February 23. — Staff Correspondent

Bus donated to school

Belgaum: The Syndicate Bank has donated a 24-seater bus to the Kittur Rani Chennamma Sainik School for Girls, Kittur on Tuesday. The keys were handed over to T.D. Patil, member secretary of the school. — Staff Correspondent
