`It'll be curtains for projects'

Many schemes in the Cauvery basin will be affected, says Patil

H K Patil

Bangalore: "It will be curtains for ongoing irrigation projects and perpetual misery for the people in the drought-hit areas of south Karnataka."

This is how leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council H.K. Patil reacted to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's final award. He said that the tribunal had committed a historic injustice to Karnataka.

Mr. Patil, who held the Water Resources portfolio in the S.M. Krishna Ministry, said the hopes of people of getting adequate water for agriculture and drinking purpose had been belied.

Mr. Patil said projects such as the Kabini second stage, Taraka and Periyapatna lift irrigation scheme, the Hemavathy and a few in the Harangi area would be affected.

The shocking aspect of the tribunal's order was that it had failed to consider the 129 tmcft of ground water in Tamil Nadu.

Asked about hydel power generation, he said it was all a dream now, as there would be no water for irrigation itself.

KFCC anguish

Terming the Cauvery tribunal's award as "disappointing and unfair," president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) Tallam Nanjunda Setty said that the chamber will take a delegation of the entire Kannada cinema industry to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and submit a memorandum pledging its support to whatever the stand the Government takes in the State's interest.

He told The Hindu that the KFCC would also support the bandh organised by the Akhila Karnataka Gadi Horata Samithi on February 12.

Vice-president of KFCC V.H. Suresh said that at the outset the award looked detrimental to the State's interest. But it would be wise to ascertain facts jumping to any conclusion. However, the industry would support the Government as it had confidence in Mr. Kumaraswamy's political acumen and balanced approach, he added.

President of the Akhila Karnataka Rajkumar Fans' Association S. R. Govindu said that the President and the Prime Minister should intervene in the Cauvery issue.

Writer and film-maker Nagathihalli Chandrashekar also came out against the award.
