Man killed in freak accident at Saidapet

CHENNAI
: A 53-year-old man was killed in a freak accident near the Saidapet bus stand on Tuesday night.
Police said that the victim Varadan, a machine mechanic in a company in Ennore, had got down from the company bus at Saidapet and was waiting to board a city bus to reach Chromepet, when a speeding lorry suddenly overturned and its lignite load fell on Varadan who died on the spot. Police rushed to the spot and cleared the lignite with the aid of a JCP machine and recovered the body.
The lorry driver, Mayakrishnan has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody a city court. The body has been sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Saidapet police have registered a case. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the driver braked to avoid a collision with another vehicle, which resulted in the mishap.
Girl stabbed
Police are on the look out for a gang, which stabbed a girl while she was going alone to her school on Wednesday.
Police said that the plus-two student resided in the Tiruvottiyur Railway colony and travelled by train daily to reach her school. Her father worked in Jolarpet Railway station. When the girl was nearing the Tondiarpet yard, the gang stabbed her and escaped from the scene. She was rushed to the Stanley Medical College hospital.
