`Midcourse correctives'

Special Correspondent

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi's letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh — advising caution while allowing foreign retailers into India — is, according to the party, not an attempt to force a rollback of the policy but a bid to introduce midcourse correctives in the policy. "She has advocated a middle path," Abhishek Singhvi said.

The letter advocated appropriate safeguards in the policy to ensure that the common man is not prejudiced by such economic activities.

Mr. Singhvi rejected the analysis that it was a reflection of the fact that the party and the government were working at cross-purposes. "Far from being at cross-purposes, it is a question of constructive contribution to nation building which happens on a continuing basis," he said.
