NEW DELHI: The foundation stone for the Mangolpuri flyover on Outer Ring Road was laid by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here on Wednesday.

The Rs.40-crore project is scheduled to be completed by June 2008 and would facilitate smooth flow of traffic in the region by providing a grade separator at one of the busiest junctions in North-West Delhi.

During the day she also inaugurated a new maternity and child block building at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital at Mangolpuri.

Catering to traffic from National Highway-10 to NH-1 and vice versa and from Mangolpuri Industrial Area Phase-1 and Phase-II, the project envisages construction of a 477-metre-long flyover along Outer Ring Road, widening and strengthening of at-level service roads, drainage of the project area, extension of the existing subway and electrical works. The structural scheme for the proposed flyover is unique with high aesthetic appeal.

Also, bearings -- which are the most vulnerable elements in the flyover from consideration of durability and seismic performance -- have been completely eliminated from this flyover and expansion joints have been provided only at the two extreme ends, thereby giving a joint-free structure for the entire stilted portion of 150-metre length.

Construction work on the project would be taken up in two phases to cause minimum hindrance to traffic.
