`Club 25' to be formed in colleges

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Units of `Club 25,' a forum for young people that promotes blood donation and healthy lifestyle, will be formed in colleges. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of blood donors from various educational institutions in the city recently.

The volunteers of the club will organise blood donation and awareness programme in their colleges and maintain a donor database for the benefit of the people in the locality. They will also go to nearby schools to conduct awareness session for high school and higher secondary students.

`Club 25,' started in Zimbabwe in 1989 to target an untapped pool of low-risk donors, has branches all over the world. It is also called Red Cross `Pledge 25.'

Some of the objectives of this forum include organising a youth group that will work to encourage blood donation among youngsters, promoting the participation of women in voluntary blood donation and creating a life-long commitment in college students to the concept of regular donation of blood even after they leave the institution.

Blood donors in the 16-25 age group, who have made a minimum of two donations a year, and first time donors who can commit to giving blood regularly (2 to 3 donations a year) can become the members of the club. The members will have access to adequate and appropriate information and advice on how to protect themselves from HIV and other infections. They will also acquire leadership skills for personal development and growth through social interaction at different levels.

The club will elect a local administrative committee to organise activities in connection with the World Blood Donor Day (June 14), National Blood Donation Day (October-1) and World Aids Day. The technical aspects will be handled in cooperation with the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology.
