Sworn in Governor

JAKARTA: The former rebel leader, Irwandi Yusuf, was inaugurated as the new Governor of Aceh province of Indonesia for the period of 2007 to 2012 on Thursday, national television TVRI reported here.Present at the inauguration were former top leader of the Separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) Malik Mahmud and foreign ambassadors. Mr. Yusuf and Mr. Nazar won the landmark first-direct gubernatorial election in the province on December 11 last by obtaining 38.20 per cent of total votes. Aceh will get 70 per cent share of revenue from its abundant natural resources of oil and gas, as per the peace deal between the rebels and Jakarta signed on August 15 in 2005 in Helsinki. The Indonesian Parliament passed a landmark law for Aceh province in July last year. Mr. Yusuf has said that he wants to give top priority to economic development. — Xinhua
