KOLLAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said that humanities should be given as much importance that science and technology subjects get. Inaugurating the year-long silver jubilee celebrations of the Government college at Chavara, near here, on Thursday, he said subjects such as history and literature had few takers now. The trend should change. He said students had a big role to play in social progress. Social responsibility and the urge for development should be the factors leading them. The capitalistic economy aimed at social anarchy, and students should react against it. He said agitation by students against commercialisation of education during the previous United Democratic Front rule was an awakening. He called for an improvement in teaching standards for overcoming the questions being raised on the quality of education imparted in the State. The Chief Minister unveiled a plaque to mark the laying of foundation stone for the Rs. 4-crore silver jubilee memorial building of the college. Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran, who is Chavara MLA, presided over the function. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran gave away merit awards to the winners.
