KHAMMAM: Collector Sashibushan Kumar on Thursday assured farmers of effective measures to check the sale and supply of substandard seed. Laying the foundation stone for a seed testing centre building at the agriculture market yard, he said the government could provide facilities for soil and fertilizer testing along with the seed testing in the market yard as part of the single window diagnostic services promised to the peasant community. He said that the crop losses could be avoided by ensuring the use of genuine seed, pesticides and fertilizers. Farmers could ascertain the quality of the seed purchased from shops and dealers at the new testing centre in the market yard. They would be furnished with the test report in a fortnight.
Mumbai trip
He said about 30 acres of land was sought for the expansion of the chilli yard and it was in active consideration of the administration. Some 50 farmers would be sent to Mumbai on an exposure trip enabling them to know more about the plant and its use. About 250 farmers from the district would be sent to Delhi to take part in the Kishan Mela scheduled for February 24. Khamam MLA Thammineni Veerabhadram, in his address, stressed the need for initiating action against those found to be deceiving farmers by selling substandard seed and spurious brands of pesticides. He said that farmers must go for the use of new technology.
