Sarpanches' petition dismissed

Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The High Court on Thursday paved the way for elections to the Legislative Council when it dismissed a writ petition filed by sarpanches, seeking voting rights in the ensuing elections to the Upper House.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice G. S. Singhvi and Justice C. V. Nagarjuna Reddy delivered the final judgment on Thursday in the jam-packed court hall of the Chief Justice.

The Sarpanches' Association through its president Y. B. Rajendra Prasad filed the writ petition challenging the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council Act, 2006, which excluded sarpanches from the electoral college.
