CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu will file a review petition with the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal on points that concerned the State, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Thursday. There were some "shortcomings" that the State wished to bring to the Tribunal's notice, he told presspersons here. Public Works Minister Durai Murugan said the contentious issues included the distress sharing formula and the monitoring mechanism. "Our technical cell people are going through the voluminous order. There is time to file our petition." Asked about convening an all-party meeting to discuss the issue, Mr. Karunanidhi said this needed to be done with great caution. Livelihoods of many common people and the poor, many of whom were working in Karnataka, were involved.
"Misunderstanding"
On the protests in Karnataka, he said there was some misunderstanding and that people were instigated. There was an impression that all the 419 tmcft allotted to Tamil Nadu was being given by Karnataka. "I also had thought so. But this is not true." The Tribunal had taken the water availability in the entire basin into account. There was no great difference in the shares of the two States. The protests would die down over the next few days, he said. Asked whether he would speak to the Karnataka Chief Minister on the issue, Mr. Karunanidhi said he would do so if necessary.
