NEW LIFE: Some of the child workers who were rescued from hotels and motorcycle repair garages in Gulbarga on Wednesday.
GULBARGA: A vigilance squad of officials from different departments, under the supervision of the UNICEF-NORAD Child Labourer Eradication Programme, conducted a series of raids at different hotels and motorcycle repair garages in the city on Wednesday and rescued 14 child labourers. Official sources said here on Thursday that four of the rescued children were above 14 years and were sent back to the homes of their parents in Gulbarga city. Their parents were warned not to allow the children to get involved in any such activity again and to send them to schools. The sources said that another four children were casual workers who were regularly attending school, and they were also handed over to their parents with a similar warning. The remaining six children were sent to two child labour rehabilitation centres run by non-governmental organisations in the city, the sources said. One of the rescued children was from Tamil Nadu, and his family had settled down in Gulbarga city only a few days ago. The UNICEF-NORAD Child Labour Eradication Programme was launched in Gulbarga taluk four years ago with an objective to eradicate child labour totally in the taluk.
