KOLKATA: Partners in the ruling Left Front in West Bengal have failed to reach an agreement on bringing about amendments to legislation relating to land reforms for purposes of facilitating land availability for industry, commerce and infrastructure. Discussions on the proposed amendments to the West Bengal Land Reform (Amendment) 2006 Act were held at a meeting of the Left Front committee here on Thursday. But the partners "could not reach a consensus," committee chairman Biman Bose said. Talks would be held individually with them. "We are hopeful that the issue will be settled through these discussions." Despite the differences within the constituents on the matter, "the Left Front partners all agreed on the need to strengthen Left Front unity," Mr. Bose, who is also the secretary of the State CPI(M) committee, said. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was among those who attended the meeting. The amendments are being sought to provide impetus to the industrialisation drive initiated by the State Government by increasing the availability of land for setting up industry and infrastructure, including special economic zones and technology parks. At present, the proposed legislation incorporating the amendments is with a select committee of the Assembly.
